Armik — Alegra

Jan. 29, 2014

Ah, the sweet sound of Nuevo Flamenco, that vibrant, exotic Latin style that makes the most of every note played.  Veteran guitarist Armik has done a masterful job of working that Armik CDmystical something that captures the heart and soul. Here with one of his latest releases Alegra, on Bolero Records (yes, he has about three other recent releases, as well), he continues to seduce, excite, and draw one into the alluring beauty of his music.

Leading with the tasteful lead track, he struts through this project with beautiful melodies and images of both sunshine and moonlight. The spicy element of the genre is displayed with much heat on “Summer Night’s Dance,” a serious dance workout for the Latin dancer in you.

The music here has body, character, and the beckoning mystique of the Latin culture. The manner in which Armik slips from a seductive, sensual mid-tempo offering to one that seeks to express the intensity and power of dance and celebration is certainly praiseworthy.

Each piece here is a charmer in its own right. Just pick one, be it the title track or “Dream Catcher” or “Alicante” or the moving, passionate “Rainbow Island” or the oh-so-romantic “Oceans Apart,” which seems to paint an image for me of lovers missing and longing for each other from other parts of the globe.  Each note is a calling out to that special someone. An undeniably delicious tune indeed…and more follow.

When it comes to Armik’s playing and technique, it is abundantly clear why he ranks among the best in this style. Everything is conveyed with such ease yet with authority and an intent focus on expression. From crystal clear solos to thick and magical chords, this is one guitarist who truly claims and embraces the soul of this music.

For Latin jazz and Nuevo Flamenco lovers, this is a must-have album. – Ronald Jackson
