Aziza Miller – This Journey of Love

Sept. 11, 2016

Here’s a fresh offering from New Yorker and former musical director for the late Natalie Cole, keyboardist/vocalist/poet Aziza Miller. The new aziza-miller-cdEP This Journey of Love is a solid production of top-tier quality jazz/R&B with phat keys skills, fine melodies and hooks, and smart vocals.

Combining that Latin sway (title track) with jazz sensibilities and poise, including charming and riveting tributes to the great Natalie Cole (“A Song For My Friend”) and the legendary Horace Silver (“A Song for Silver”), Miller is simply captivating in her eclecticism and meticulous handling of this music.

Totally drenched in sophistication, there are no vanilla two or three-chord push-offs here. This is discerning ear stuff. Music for the soul, the body, and the very air you breathe.

Some tunes catch you immediately; some artists catch you as quickly. It’s a real gift when you have both in one recording. Miller pulls this off with ease here.

The EP closes with a dance number, “Say Yes (time to get my blessing)” that bounces all over the place in a celebratory demonstrating of glee and dares you to sit still. A big “testify” moment.

This work is of that solid, full quality that truly beckons you to pause in your busy day and let the music wash over and refresh you before you get on with the rest of your day’s journey. Maybe it’ll be the punctuation mark to end your day. Either way, it’s what you need. – Ronald Jackson
