Dr. Dave — Carefree

Feb. 26, 2015

Did somebody call a doctor? Well, he’s here. Of course, the ills he probably can cure aren’t at all physical. Still, if you’re suffering from musical boredom, Dr. Dave just may be your guy. Coming forth with a mixed bag of originals and covers on an album called Carefree, the good “doctor”/guitarist provides some very smooth and fluid chops and melodies that are bound to please even the most discriminating among smooth jazzers.

Some will ask, “So, just who is Dr. Dave?” With six releases — including this one — under his belt, Dr. Dave is certainly no newcomer to the music scene. In fact, early on in his career, he was part of a popular ensemble called ZZAJJ. The group was quite impressed with his scatting/George Benson-like licks, and soon enough, the doc was cranking out slick releases under his nickname – one being with his House Call Band.

If you sample the guitarist’s previous material, you’ll find an interesting display of styles and material. For example, the album Dr. Dave and The House Call Band is a mostly funky project with Carl Evans Jr. of Fattburger joining him. Another side of the doctor can be heard on Too Cool For You, a country/folksy offering, and Love Potion is more closely aligned with this latest laid-back recording, full of quiet swagger and mostly comprised of that mid-tempo jazzy groove. In fact, this quiet swagger, along with choice melodies, is what helped this release “make the cut” for our CD reviews section. In a word, tasteful polish. You’ll find examples of this on tunes like the title track, “Almost Trinidad,” his cool version of The Beatles’ “Come Together,” and the sweet and gentle “Sylvia,” among others.

Settle back and feel this one. It’s meant to soak through and heal whatever ails you musically. – Ronald Jackson
