Duffmusiq — Soulleash

May 29, 2017

The debut release, Soulleash, from international guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and award-winning producer Damir Demirovic (aka Duffmusiq} is an eclectic album of full-bodied jazz fused with R&B grooves.

Wearing many hats on this project (producer and mixer, as well as guitarist, keyboardist, saxophonist, and bassist), Duffmusiq weaves a smooth cloth of satiny, bluesy, and soulful out of impressive material known as simply good music.

With a heavy emphasis on jazz and blues, other elements like R&B flow in and out of this material with ease and when needed to give the tracks even more definition.

To drive home this point, take a listen to tracks like ”After Midnight,” “My Only Love,” “Cookies,” “Summer Rain,” the title track and “Party People” — which are two tracks that so remind me of the late, great Ronny Jordan with snappy riffs and that acid jazz funk groove, along with very effective vocals supplied by Quisha Wint, Gyles Natalie, Wade O. Brown, and Jeff Eager.

In a nutshell, there’s really some good quality material here that commands attention. This wasn’t simply conceived overnight, thrown together and recorded in haste. There was thought, feeling, and conviction in this equation. The result is a well-produced album that massages jazz, blues, and R&B in familiar, comfortable ways.

Says Duffmusiq about this project, “I had the idea of doing the album ‘Santana-style’ by having different guest musicians on every track, and incorporating small vocal parts here and there, so that it’s not an entirely instrumental album.” I’m not so sure I hear a “Santana-style” presentation (beyond, of course, recruiting guest artists and introducing small vocal parts – which many artists do) – I personally hear a lot more of the Ronny Jordan-style, but I certainly feel that, whatever goal Duffmusiq was trying to achieve, which I strongly suspect involved just making great music that listeners will enjoy, he achieved it. Just listen. – Ronald Jackson
