iReedMan & Ms. Monét – Talk to Somebody

Apr. 11, 2015

I remain so very impressed by the quality of new collaborations by artists who really and truly have a knack for knowing what goes into the formula of Reedman&Monetgood jazz. An example is the collaboration of longtime saxman Joel C. Peskin (aka iReedMan) and the lovely Ms. Monét who offers mind-blowing nightingale-like 5-octave vocals in a manner that leaves one almost speechless. Talk about your Dream Team. Their new effort called Talk to Somebody deserves a standing ovation for depth, quality, eclecticism, and more. It’s music to get excited about.

Merging the powerful elements of soulful, moving jazz with totally sterling vocals and gritty funk, these two clearly show that they have the pulse of C-jazz, blues, and more and know exactly where they live in you because, unless you’re a rock, you simply cannot listen to this project and not be moved by its weightiness, body, and feel.

From the comely and melodic lead track “Strawberry Letter 23” (would love to hear the story behind that title) to the jazzy, snappy “Turn Around” with an R&B twist to the funky high-steppin’ Rufus-like “Where Ya Goin’” and beyond, the duo often reminds one of the successful duet Peter Legat and Kellie Sae (Count Basic – Wow! where have they been??). However, make no mistake, this pair has obviously set out to set its own fingerprint on C-jazz, and, if this effort is any indication, the two are well on their way there.

This type of music and style is always so riveting, especially with a vocalist like Ms. Monét and an artist who knows his way around a sax like Peskin. Solid material. Certainly worth your time. – Ronald Jackson
