Lin Rountree – Stronger Still

Feb. 7, 2018

Veteran groovemaker/trumpeter Lin Rountree is back at the helm of another solid production again, this time with Stronger Still, his latest collection of sassy, high-steppin’, jazz-filled tracks tailor-made to get your “engine” started.

Rountree’s consistently strong grip on what pushes the genre is, yes, stronger still as he struts through with standout trumpet melodies, runs, and sophisticated blends of jazz & R&B grooves.

Joined here by guitarists Adam Hawley and David P. Stevens, keyboardist Skinny Hightower, saxman Marcus Anderson, and vocalist Jessica Jolia, Rountree sets up a masterfully colorful collage that takes one on a wonderful odyssey of musical fluidity and charm.

Starting you off with the coolly stompin’ “Pass the Groove,” the trumpeter serves up full-bodied jam after full-bodied jam, including the saucy, finger-snappin’ mid-tempo “Any Time With You,” the melodically dreamy “This Time Around,” which happens to be one of my faves here, the steady, rock-solid “Take It Back” featuring Hawley’s guitar, the strollin’ title track, and the sexy charisma of “In My Soul” featuring Anderson on sax…and there are other charmers here that I haven’t touched on but are quite capable of taking you to whatever musical Wonderland you seek.

If there’s one thing you can count on with Rountree’s music, it’s that it can gratify, romance, and transport you with such ease. There is that smoooothness, that silkiness, and meticulous manner in which he delivers his trumpet, all with a thick layer of soul/R&B as an added ingredient.

All in all, this album will not disappoint, and Rountree fans will surely delight in the completeness of this project. So, nestle into that comfy sofa or rock back in that recliner, press “play” on this one, and just go there. The trip is surely worth your while. – Ronald Jackson
