Phil Perry – A Better Man

Jan. 29, 2015

Who is better at crooning the petals off a flower, calling up images of calm seas and warm, caressing breezesPhil Perry CD, and the kiss of love than the perennial songmeister Phil Perry? Here again with another charmer called A Better Man, Perry punctuates just why he is so highly regarded, and he reassures all lovers that he is, as always, “on the job.” The man is simply synonymous with romance and the love of life.

Tracks like the title track, “Sorry I Let You Go,” “Let It Rain,” his interpretations of Curtis Mayfield’s “Gypsy Woman” and “I’m So Proud,” “Dreaming’s Out of Season,” and the rousing and inspirational “Stand Up,” just as examples, are all meticulously performed.  All of the original tracks have that Perry touch and depth.

Joining this king of song are the renowned producer/multi-instrumentalist Chris “Big Dog” Davis, guitarist Rhon Lawrence, trumpet master Rick Braun, saxman Kim Waters, and vocalist Howard Hewett, each helping to make this production a vibrant work of art.

No, no one does it quite like Phil Perry, a dedicated artist in every sense of the word. I don’t believe I’d receive much argument for opining that his rich and far-reaching vocals and style are both riveting and stirring, that his conviction to voice as a true and effective musical instrument is strong and true. Perry fans will not be disappointed in the least, and new listeners will learn just how far the human singing voice can reach in terms of touching the soul. A Better Man, like so many of Perry’s other recordings, can take you there. Go there with him. – Ronald Jackson
