Julian Vaughn — Breakthrough

Aug. 3, 2012

For his Trippin’ N Rhythm debut release, bassist Julian Vaughn chose to blow the doors open with his entrance. A masterful bassist with insight and power, you could practically foretell that some major label would be fast on his heels to sign him. Trippin’ N Rhythm wasted little time in doing just that. His debut release, Breakthrough, due for release on August 14, is appropriately titled as he breaks through to another level of notoriety.

From the muscular opening track “On Your Feet,” you know that this is going to be one party not to miss. The 6’7” self-taught Kansas City, MO, native’s expressive chops tell a story here, and it’s one you want to hear.

Joined by such notable jazz musicians as Mel Brown, Darren Rahn, Frank Selman, and Joey Woolfolk, Vaughn leaves no stone unturned as he lights into such  tracks as “J’s Jammin,” the title track, the cover of the Whispers’ “Rock Steady,” and “Right On Time” and eases into sassy mid-tempo tracks like “Ju Ju’s Groove” and “Be My Girl” (the latter is one of my faves) and smoothly glides with soft, romantic tracks like “The Thought of You” “No Matter,” (another fave of mine) and the finale “Always Be Together.”

Vaughn’s style of funk and finesse is quite refreshing and attractive. Signs are very evident that this creative bassman will be offering his tight grooves to us for a long while to come. Settle back and groove with him. The breakthrough has happened. – Ronald Jackson
