Kennard Ramsey — Somos

Dec. 2, 2011

Here is a diverse, eclectic, worldly fusion, free jazz, new age, Latin project containing casually delivered treats with guitarist Kennard Ramsey at the helm on guitar. In places, the album, Somos, smacks of producer/composer/master bassist Stanley Clarke—and it should, considering that he is its executive producer .

I have to honestly say that, in previewing this release, I was focused on the Latin element. When I finally delved into the album, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find so many other alive elements.

The lead track is a laid back number that toys between Latin and the fusion we have come to know as that of Clarke and others who sometimes nibble at the edges of free jazz without losing the essence of the contemporary core.

For the hardcore smooth jazzers, they will find comfort and satisfaction in pieces like the mid-tempo tracks “White Owl (Pressure)” with alluring vocals from Chiwoniso and “Loved Right” with adept electric piano work from Ruslan Sirota.

The Latin influence, while evident throughout this release, pours on an extra dose of sexiness as it also wraps itself in a bit of soft R&B and jazz on “This Time.”

Ramsey then travels well into the soul and culture of World/Latin on the cool and mellow “El Cabellero.”

The guitarist makes it certain that each song here carries its own weight and possesses its own personality.  This is an album telling a very diverse tale through a mix of mystique and exoticism.  If you’re seeking a CD of pure smooth jazz, this may not work for you. However, if you like a bit of adventurism in other types of arrangements and an abundance of stimulating sounds, you may want to stop here and stay for awhile. – Ronald Jackson
