Maysa – Blue Velvet Soul

June 20, 2013

Immediately upon hearing the first notes of the lead track from the new release, Blue Velvet Soul, by songstress extraordinaire Maysa, I was totally captivated.  Anyone who’s ever heard this nightingale from Baltimore, MD, knows exactly what I mean. The purest tone, perfect pitch, and the utter sexiness of her delivery all come cascading down upon you as you stroll through her world of music.

Among others who figure prominently on this release are producer/multi-instrumentalist Chris “Big Dog” Davis and her Incognito comrade Jean-Paul (“Bluey”) Maunick who not only co-produces this jewel but offers his vocals, as well.

Stating the obvious, all of Maysa’s recordings have that special honey-dipped vibe delivered in her very identifiable signature vocals. Her soulful, sultry slow-to-mid-tempo tracks (e.g., “Beautiful Dreamer,” “Sophisticated Lover,” “Be There,” “What Can I Do”) are riveting, and sitting still is not an option on her driving up-tempo tunes (e.g., ”When Your Soul Answers,” “Put It On Me,” Nothing But You”).

Despite having a remarkable range and such an emotional reach, here is one truly humble artist who is always so very gracious. That humility alone is an attractant.

Maysa’s romantically deep and often clever lyrics dance so well with her golden voice. Is it any wonder why she is the featured vocalist on so many projects other than her own?   She is true quality and depth personified.

The album begins with a powerful, soul-soaked sexy slow number called “Beautiful Dreamer” (not be confused with  the Stephen C. Foster tune), and the beauty just keeps coming from that point on through the very attractive “Love Me Good.”

Maysa often recalls when she first became interested in singing, which was after hearing the powerful vocals of Melba Moore in the Broadway hit PurlieBlue Velvet Soul serves to again remind us of the debt of gratitude we owe Purlie for providing that inspiration.  – Ronald Jackson
