“Wow!” That was Hiromi’s first reaction to hearing Columbian harpist Edmar Castaneda at the Montreal Jazz Festival.  She wants you to say “wow” too, as she and Edmar perform their spellbinding music in the Bing Concert Hall on the Stanford campus. This will be Hiromi’s debut at the Stanford Jazz Festival; this will be Edmar’s second performance at the Stanford Jazz Festival since last playing in 2011.

Shane, brother-in-law to drummer Dave Hooper and best friend of Michael Lington, passed away suddenly last month and this benefit, organized by Michael for the family, is to help ease the expenses during this most difficult time.

July 10 – July 15; July 24 – July 29, 2017 – 7th Annual Parker Summer Jazz Workshop for Students, San Diego, CA

In order to prepare our kids to be the next generation of musicians, they’ve got to be well taught. Francis Parker School in San Diego is partnering with the House of Blues to offer middle and high school students an opportunity to study and play music with professional jazz musicians while learning performance skills, improvisation, jazz theory and history.

One-week sessions are held at Francis Parker School’s Thielmann Music Center. Students give a closing performance at the House of Blues, one of San Diego’s premier concert venues. Beginning, intermediate and advanced students are welcome at this hands-on workshop designed to nuture their growth as musicians. We hope to see a new batch of artists blossom at these workshops…will you be there?

I’ve mentioned the scoop earlier about this show, but here’s the full lowdown: It’s not often that British keyboardist Oli Silk comes to the US and even rarer that he makes it to New York. August 4-6, 2017 – Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, RI

The Newport Jazz Festival is considered the “First Annual American Jazz Festival. “ In 1954, the first event was held at Newport Casino, in the Bellevue Avenue Historic District of Newport, Rhode Island. It incorporated academic panel discussions and featured live musical performances outdoors, on a lawn. These performances were given by a number of notable jazz musicians, including Billie Holiday, and were emceed by Stan Kenton.[5]In 2017, the tradition continues, the festival will present a talented line up of musicians for three exciting days, including the original Bela Fleck & The Flecktones and Snarky Puppy.

Warren Hill’s Cancun Jazz Festival is an All-Inclusive music festival that takes place at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, located approximately 45 minutes south of Cancun, Mexico, just northeast of Tulum. The festival is a 4-day event taking place August 31 thru September 3, 2017. September 23, 2017 – Sax on the River’s Smooth Jazz Concert for the Cure, Sacramento, CA

A fabulous local show near and dear to my heart. This little festival has grown over the years to where it outgrew its name and cozy backyard setting on the water to its new home at the McConnell Estates Winery in Elk Grove, CA (a stone’s throw from the state capital). The music is still fantastic and the benefit for this show is still the same – raising funds for breast cancer prevention and research. Originally held in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the show will run in September to lead the pack to find a cure.

This year’s featured artists will be Marcus Anderson, Phil Denny, Adam Hawley and Cecil Ramirez. Great food, fabulous wine and a great time is guaranteed!

October 6-8, 2017 – Camellia City Smooth Jazz Festival, Slidell, LA

It’s always a pleasure to tell others about new festivals and this is one of them!  Join festival founders and Smooth Jazz aficionados Wil and Diane Bias for the first annual Smooth Jazz festival in the New Orleans area.  This couple has traveled to and  have produced many shows and wanted to bring their love for the music to the Northshore to spotlight Smooth Jazz as an educational and motivational tool while partnering with local government, civil organizations and the business community.

The three-day festival features a golf tournament on Friday, day-long jazz festival on Saturday and concludes with an indoor jam session on Sunday at the Harbor Center.

Artists include Gerald Albright, Alex Bugnon, Chieli Minucci, Gerald Veasley, Steve Oliver, Marcus Anderson, 3rd Force, Joey Sommerville, Generation NeXt (Nicholas Cole, Lin Rountree and Lebron), Bill Summers and Stephanie Jordan. More artists are still to be announced.

October 6-9, 2017 – Elan Trotman’s 4th Annual Barbados Jazz Excursion and Golf Tournament, Barbados, West Indies

Have some fun in the sun Columbus Day weekend! Join saxman/host Elan Trotman for his 4th annual island festival, where ‘Bigger but Simpler’ is the mandate for a great time. October 12-15, 2017 – 28th Annual Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, Rehoboth Beach, DE

The popular festival has been the celebrated finale to the beach’s summer season for over 28 years! Besides being home to an amazing show of performances, the RBJF is the finale of a week-long series of live performances at various venues (a Straight Ahead fest called the True Blue Jazz Festival also runs 10/11-15 in Rehoboth Beach).
